100% Holtfreter's Solution

Use at 50% strength for housing adults, 25% for embryos.

NaCl, 3.46 g (non-iodized table salt)
KCl, 0.05 g
CaCl2, 0.1 g
NaHCO3, 0.2 g (buffer) in 1 liter of distilled water
pH adjusted to 7.4

Modified Holtfreter's

Add 0.2 g MgSO4 . 7H2O to the recipe.

Axolotl Colony Modifications

For water in which to house axolotl adults, larvae, and embryos developing within jelly coats, the Axolotl Colony uses tap water which has been treated to remove chlorine, chloramines, ammonia, etc. to make a non-buffered, non-pH-adjusted modified Holtfreter's solution. Embryos are kept in a 20% solution (avoid concentrating the salts through evaporation as the embryos develop), and larvae, juveniles, and adults are kept in a 40% solution. Occasionally animals exhibiting skin problems or other conditions will be housed temporarily in 100% solution.

100% Steinberg's Solution

NaCl, 3.4 g
KCl, 0.05 g
Ca(NO3)2 . 4H2O, 0.08 g
MgSO4 . 7H2O, 0.205 g
Tris, 0.56 g
1 liter distilled water
HCl to pH 7.4
